How exaclty does Block Value work? Is there any amount I should be aiming for?
Whenever you block, Block Value reduces the damage dealt by the blocked attack. If your block value is greater than or equal to the amount of damage dealt (post-armor reduction), you take no damage.

Also for the prot paladins who are enchanters you could maybe add the ring enchants. Which brings me to another question i had; which of the enchants would be best? Spelldamage or +stats on rings?
Spell damage. The Stats enchant barely adds any avoidance or HP worth mentioning, but the spell damage is a noticeable threat increase.

I have two questions:

1. We're currently working through SSC/TK and the only times I tank a boss are when multiple tanks are required. I just got my T5 shoulders and was appalled to find RED SOCKETS!! I would have to gem with at least purple gems to remain uncrushable and would definitely lose some stam in the exchange. I only have a couple of upgrades left to get out of T5 and so am thinking forward to Hyjal. Is the T5 gear setting me up for more avoidance in preparation for T6 content? Or did Blizz just jack up the sockets on these shoulders?

2. I'm grasping the basic concept that Block Rate/Block Value can be more effective towards my survival than stamina sometimes. However, I'm having difficulty applying it to my toon! I've been lazy lately and not swapping to my trash gear on trash. Would my block set make my healers' lives easier even with the lower hp?

Boss Set:
HP 15987
Dodge: 21.96
Parry: 17.75
Block: 16.85 (stops 257 damage)

Block Set:
HP: 15217 (I have 5 slots that can take 15 stam gems still)
Dodge: 19.59
Parry: 16.26
Block: 23.02 (stops 469 damage)

1) Red sockets suck, yeah, but I find filling them with a "Glowing" purple color gem is helpful. A little spell damage for threat, and some stamina to help maintain hitpoints and the socket bonus. Threat is going to become increasingly more important for you as you go into T6 content.

2) Good block value certainly does make it easier on your healers, especially when you're tanking multiple mobs. However, that's a double-edged sword. Yes, it's easier to keep you alive, but since you're taking less damage, you may also start to mana starve yourself in extreme cases. It's most helpful to find a good middle ground between block value, stamina, evasion, and spell damage when fighting through trash. You want to take damage to keep yourself going, but not enough to be too difficult to keep alive. And you want to have enough spell damage for threat to keep the trash beating on you. The 469 blocked damage on your block set looks pretty good, but at what expense to your hitpoints and spell damage? It's obvious when you've gone too far. I've gone into a couple trash pulls in BT with over 650 damage blocked, and about 400 spell damage (too low), and before I knew it most of my mana was gone and the mobs were trying to kill our warlocks.

Added 3) Be sure to consider spell damage in all your tanking sets. An awesome blocking set is worthless if you only have a little spell damage to back it up. Your raid dps will pull that shit right off you, and there won't be any attacks for you to block after a few seconds. Same with a boss tanking set. If you're putting out piddly threat, your dps has to slow down, the fight lasts longer, more chances for mistakes, etc. Overall, if you have good healers, I find it's better to err on the side of a ton of threat, especially when doing trash. Boost your spell damage to 600+ and your dps will love you. If you have between 250 - 400 blocked damage, it's survivable, and you'll have plenty of mana to keep you the center of threat. And if you can pull off a lot of blocking and a lot of spell damage at the same time? Well that's a wonderful AE tanking set right there. Ideal for things like Hyjal. Just need to make sure to take enough big hits to keep the consecration pouring out of you.

My SD is only 5 less in my block gear. That's why I didn't include it in the comparison above.

Thanks for the input.

Dodge + Stam gem is a nice one to put in those T5 shoulders:

Dodge Gem List

Because realistically, you won't be replacing the T5 shoulders till at minimum the ones from Supremus.
So you're gonna be doing a lot of trash tanking in Hyjal. Despite what some would say, the added 10 dodge rating
is perfect IMO, 10 dodge, 12 stam, and you get the socket bonus. Pretty hard to argue those two. I personally had
two of the heroic ones, thats how I came to 10 dodge.

There's also the 4 dodge 6 stam crafted one now if you don't wanna farm for the 5 dodge.

So, in looking through another forum site, I came across a couple of comments that I thought odd...and rather than try and make sense of it there, I'm bringing those over here, where perhaps more intelligent conversation about current thoughts on these two can take place.

Firstly...the claim was made that Ardent Defender is worthless, and that if it kicks in, your healers are failing. In recent weeks, I've picked up the MgT Commendation, and have noticed the proc kick in a LOT in various travels (10 mans, as well as Mt.H, where we currently are battling.) With having the Commendation, is AD something that is actually less viable, or should it be left in as additional security against a possible death?

Second...the claim was made that Imp'd Judgement is undesirable, or at most only 1 pt should go into it. What is the current thought regarding this talent? Dropping from 10sec to 8sec CD for Judgement is an increase of 20% threat from JoR or JoV, so why would this such a bad talent?

The proc rate you observe on the Commendation should answer the question as to whether AD is "worthless" or not. The idea that you'll only go under 35% if your healers are failing is silly on a number of levels:

1) Many raid bosses have spike-damage abilities that are designed to one-shot most of your health bar away. AD gives you an extra cushion against subsequent smaller attacks until your healers can react and heal you to full again.

2) In TBC fights healers often need a second or two to save their own asses and AD increases your chance of surviving that second, especially if more than one healer needs to move at a time.

3) The logical conclusion of the argument is that if the last 35% of your health bar never comes into play, why not just gear up for 65% of your normal hp and add a bunch of threat instead?

As for Imp. Judgement, the issue there has to do with the GCD, and the fact that when tanking a raid boss you absolutely must hit Holy Shield every 10 seconds. Since the GCD is 1.5 seconds, you can't hit anything else for a 3-second window around your Holy Shield activation. Therefore, Consecration is effectively forced onto a 10-second cooldown, and you can only refresh your seal every 10 seconds as well. For this reason, many prot paladins prefer to just do everything on a 10-second cycle to keep things simple.

Judgement itself is not on the GCD, so you could still judge every 8 seconds and just occasionally go a second or two without a seal while waiting on the GCD to recast it. This would give you a bit more threat over the normal 10-second rotation. Some people do this and say they have no problem keeping everything straight. Myself, I don't have the mental coordination to handle that, so I'm one of the people who sticks with a 10-second judgement.

My comrades are my weapons, and I am their shield.

Macros: Two lazy mode macros for Blessing of Protection, no self target and auto self target

No Self Cast Blessing of Protection - Blessing of Protections a targetted mobs target, will not blessing you even if the mob is now targetting you (stops aggro drop).

#showtooltip Blessing of Protection
/cast [button:2,target=focus,exists][help]Blessing of Protection
/stopmacro [button:2][help]
/assist [harm]

Self target Blessing of Protection + auto clear - for fights like Nightbane, ensures that your BoP hits yourself rather than your current target

2 Useful Gear progression guides, one solely Paladin gear (spell damage / best in slot), one all good tanking epics for paladins, does not include blues. Additionally a pre-kara uncrushability guide.

I feel gear guides are normally not of much value, being highly subjective, however these gear rankings are generally very helpful given the wide range and uses of paladin gear, both focused from the MT point of view. (I highly recommend the Wayward shield. Start looking for it on the AH early; put an alt in Org and check every day. You can start using it at 65, so start looking then or even earlier. It is far and away the best shield for uncrushability.)

Enchant:
Major Stamina
or
Shield Block

Libram
Libram of Repentance (15 badges)

There's four more items that you may find useful. Remember, uncrushability isn't like other stats. It's just as useful to be uncrushable buffed as unbuffed (you can't, after all, become more uncrushable by being buffed). These can put you over the top:

Elixir of Major Agility
or
Elixir of Mastery
or
Flask of Fortification
and
Warp Burger

Does anyone have a threat-wise comparison between 2/2 Imp. Judgement and 2/3 Precision? Would be interesting.

righteous defense

I'm used to healing as a paladin. For hyjal trash or any other trash tanking, I like to keybind righteous defense to the side mouse button of healbot. This allows instead of targeting the npc and using the macro, to mouseover anyone you see taking damage and quickly righteous defense. Be careful of warlocks life tapping (you should know the names of the warlocks in your guild/raid). But this is faster in my opinion then targeting the npc that has gotten away. Anyone else do this?

Yes, but aggro indicators in raid frames is a million times better than seeing who lose health, cause then they've already been hit.

Any ideas?
Just wanted to follow-up on this as it would benefit me as well as I just specc'd my pally to prot this weekend. I would like to be able to plug in new items and gems to see the impact on my stats.

Is there something similar to Cheeky's Spreadsheet (for hunters) or Rawr which we tankidins can utilize?

For mitigation, the best way to do this is to use the calculator feature of the TankPoints mod, which lets you apply deltas to your current gear. Shows your hit table, effective HP, etc, and since it runs ingame there's no startup time spent entering your gear, etc.

As far as threat, it depends on circumstances, but as a rule of thumb, +2 spelldamage = +1 tps on a single-target non-undead/demon mob.

My comrades are my weapons, and I am their shield.

Hi,

This might be a stupid question, but could someone tell me why pallies only need 97.4% mitigation for crush immunity while warriors need 102.4%?

You DO need 102.4% (miss + parry + dodge + block). Keep in mind a mob's base miss is 5%, which is where you are pulling that number from most likely.

Libram of Repentance also adds ~5% block to Holy Shield, so if you have that it factors into the calculation.

So basically I will only need 97.4% combined mitigation on my character's defense pane, not 102.4%?

Thanks for the clear up

OK, I have a question about threat gen that I can't seem to find an answer to.

The general rule of thumb for pallies is spell dmg = threat. If that holds true then I've hit some sort of wall that I've seen another pally trump.

My character sheet

Don't mind the agility to gloves, it was a c
